Dr. Patrick Lauwers is a vascular surgeon from Belgium, specialized in the treatment of people with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) and the diabetic foot. In October 2024, he defended his PhD dissertation entitled “Diabetic foot and diabetes-related amputations in Belgium: facts, figures and the underexposed nutritional aspect”.

Besides the clinical work of daily practice, he engages in the formation and education on the diabetic foot of medical students at the Antwerp University, and of paramedics throughout Belgium as well. On national level, he is president of the working group of the diabetic foot of the Diabetes Liga (patient organization). Since the early beginning of 2005, he is also member of the group of experts of IQED-foot (Initiative for Quality improvement and Epidemiology in multidisciplinary Diabetic Foot Clinics), one of the rare national systems of auditing and quality control in the field of the diabetic foot.

He recently joined the IWGDF wound healing working group.
