Dr. Chiwanga is an Internal Medicine Physician and Clinical Endocrinologist at Muhimbili National Hospital, and an Honorary Lecturer at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Tanzania. She holds a Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine, a Master of Science in Endocrinology and Diabetes, and a Master of Science in Public Health.
Her professional and research work has a strong focus on diabetes and its complications, particularly diabetic foot prevention and management. She currently serves as a consultant in the National Diabetes Foot Program, where she provides mentorship and training to regional and district hospitals to strengthen early detection, prevention, and treatment of diabetic foot complications.
Beyond endocrinology, Dr. Chiwanga contributes to climate change and health research, examining how environmental change and extreme heat intersect with non-communicable diseases and shape health system preparedness.
Her broader research interests include the clinical and epidemiological aspects of non-communicable diseases—including diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and thyroid disorders. She has published more than 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals, serves as a reviewer for national and international journals, and is a member of the UK Research and Innovation International Development Peer Review College.
