R. Eugene Zierler is Professor of Vascular Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine and Medical Director of the D. E. Strandness Jr. Vascular Laboratory at the University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. He received an M.D. degree in 1976 from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. This was followed by a General Surgery residency at the University of British Columbia and a Vascular Surgery fellowship at the University of Washington.

Dr. Zierler’s research interests have focused on the clinical applications of noninvasive diagnostic techniques for vascular disease. Over the last 30 years, he has been involved in a series of projects based on the use of ultrasonic duplex scanning for screening and follow-up of vascular problems, including carotid artery disease, lower extremity arterial disease, surveillance of vein bypass grafts, deep vein thrombosis, and renal artery disease.

Dr. Zierler has served on the Board of Directors of Inteleos, a certification organization that includes the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) and the Alliance for Physician Certification and Advancement (APCA). He has also served on the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC- DMS) and is a Past-President of the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL). Dr. Zierler is the author or co-author of over 100 journal articles and 50 book chapters, and he is the editor of 6 textbooks.
